Claims

Claims are handled by the insurer that issued your policy. Here's how the process works, what to prepare, and where to file with each insurer.

Medical emergency right now? Get care, then call the 24/7 assistance number on your ID card or policy email — the insurer can arrange direct billing and must approve any evacuation.

Find your insurer

How a claim works

  1. Call the assistance line early. For hospital stays, evacuation or large bills, call before or as soon as possible after treatment.
  2. Ask the provider to bill the insurer. Show your ID card; network providers can often bill directly so you pay less upfront.
  3. Keep everything. Itemized bills, receipts, medical reports, prescriptions, police or airline reports, and proof of travel.
  4. File on time. Most insurers want claims within 60–90 days; file online in the insurer's member account, by email or by mail.
  5. Follow up. Track the status online. Read the Explanation of Benefits (EOB): it shows what was paid and anything still needed.
  6. Appeal if you disagree. Send a letter with supporting documents (for example a doctor's letter) within the appeal period stated in the denial.

Documents to prepare

  • Claim form and your policy or certificate number
  • Itemized medical bills, receipts and proof of payment
  • Medical reports and diagnosis
  • Passport copy and proof of travel dates (tickets, boarding passes)
  • For trip protection: proof of cancellation, refunds received, airline or carrier delay letters, baggage reports
